In cities all over the country, construction on new homes and buildings has been picking up in recent years but a shortage of skilled laborers has many industry leaders concerned, especially in Atlanta.

According to a story in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, adequate staffing remains the No. 1 uncertainty facing the city’s construction industry. While many contractors are in better shape in 2015 than they were a year ago, executives in Atlanta’s construction industry still rate their risk sentiment at a 5.2 on a 1 to 10 scale.

According to the article, it’s difficult to gauge whether the labor shortage is worse in cities where development is bouncing back. In fact, employment was up 308,000 over the past 12 months but while many construction firms have planned to expand, they are also worried about the shortages of qualified workers.

Although labor issues do not seem to have disrupted projects, experts are concerned that the cupboard is bare after many workers left to take other jobs in oil and gas, industry, or manufacturing. If construction costs decrease as a result of falling prices of oil, coal and other commodities, it will be interesting to see how the labor shortage will have an impact on the industry long term.
